Tunnels are critical components of transport infrastructure. Structural defects such as cracks or water inlets in tunnel constructions pose a great risk. In order to ensure adequate safety, legislation requires regular deformation monitoring. Today, inspections are carried out using various measurement techniques with cameras and conventional measuring devices. Processes are tedious and costly.

The data obtained are in a wide variety of formats and the degree of digitization is minimal. Digital measurement data plays an important role in long-term structural monitoring as well as optimized construction planning in line with Building Information Modeling (BIM). provide precise and objective measurement data. The system will collect data on geometry, surface structure and water ingress in tunnels in a single measurement procedure and provide BIM-compliant measurement data in digital format. In order to implement this technology, the German AKG company group, Amberg Technologies AG from Switzerland and Elaborarium SL from Spain, started to work with Fraunhofer IPM as a research partner in a joint project in the process of developing an integrated multi-sensor system.
